The beautiful Li River and surrounding mountains

Arriving by another decent plane ride (after I was almost not allowed to board because of a big luggage snafu – my name was in lights running over and over and over above the security line) to Guilin, we took a bus to the government run pier and boarded a boat for a wonderful, amazing float down the Li River.  These are the views that show up on ancient Chinese portraits and is one of the most famous areas for Chinese to visit, and are part of Chinese poetry going back to the days BC (and amazing thinking that these were being written while Jesus was walking through Jerusalem during this Holy Week).

After checking into the resort, the core group of my traveling mates quickly ate at the “western” restaurant (which was still pretty Chinese-like), and went to the most awesome, amazing, exhilaratingly beautiful show in the largest outdoor theatre in the world. All of my pictures and video recordings are on my phone, so you’ll have to check it out on the web, at least until I get home.  The director had done this production a number of years ago, and so was chosen to do the opening ceremony at the 2008 Olympics.  I’ve never seen anything like it.

Today was a little frenetic (like other days have not been!), starting with going through a market with all kinds of fresh fruit and vegetables and interesting food ( that is the biggest zucchini I’ve ever seen)

And then watching a fan maker and then going through a village and meeting children at an elementary school, but in the meantime, there were precious children everywhere

We then went to a really good restaurant where we had a cooking lesson (Kung Pao chicken) and walked through another market.  After coming back to the resort, I did these posts and took a long walk around the resort.  We’re flying to Shanghai tomorrow, so I’m off to dinner and drinks and then packing again  . . .
